Academics and Activities
Coleman offers a vast array of activities to support academic and personal growth among our students.
Our staff works faithfully to provide the best opportunities for students. Included in our offerings are several nationally recognized programs. We want to help students discover their full potential as they prepare for high school and beyond. Across all activities, our school utilizes WICOR strategies. WICOR stands for Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading. Through this focus, we help all students gain and maintain the skills necessary for Future Readiness.
Academic Standards
Kansas Academic/Curricular Standards provide information on what students should know and be able to do at different grade levels. These standards, which are developed and adopted by the Kansas State Department of Education, are guidelines school districts use to develop their own curriculum. Mastery of standards is assessed on the Kansas Assessment Benchmark. The assessed curricular standards are English Language Arts, English Language Proficiency, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Academic Standards are not the curriculum. Each school district develops its own curriculum and teachers decide how they will engage students to deliver instruction. Learn more
ASP - After School Program
Students can enroll in the FREE After School Program (ASP) which occurs Monday-Thursday after school for most of the school year. ASP has a homework and reading time following snack each day. Students then have many options for what clubs and activities they participate in. Our ASP team is regularly adjusting clubs based on students' interests. Learn more
AVID
Coleman's nationally-recognized AVID system supports student growth throughout our entire school. Teachers utilized AVID strategies in core and exploratory classes, and regularly evaluate their teaching based on research about students. Students participate in several schoolwide activities. There are also AVID Elective and AVID Excel Elective classes students can apply to join.
